Mythological Mural
A mythological themed mural for a staircase wall painted in acrylic and emulsion with small framed paintings in gouache.
'The Adventures of Orlandosseus' staircase mural is based on a relative Orlandos depicted as the Greek mythological character Odysseus dealing with his trials and triumphs through his life's journey.
It starts with Atlas and Atlassia(?) holding up a big pot which contains a tree growing from it. The pot has paintings of goats and chickens, which seem to be quite important to the Souni area in Cyprus, where this mural is located. The tree has the the little narrative images in frames hung on the wall along the twisting branches, until the branches turn into the waves of the sea and peak with a giant wave and picture of the final conquest; Penelope.
The first picture is of Orlandos defeating Polyphemus who is painted intentionally to look a bit like a real local Souni goat herder. The second picture is of Circe (or could be the local chicken farm lady), trying to tempt Orlandos with some strange potion. Next picture is of Orlandos ignoring the Sirens, who are like squawking hens. The next picture was of poor grotesque Scilla with Orlandos befriending her, because she needs a friend. The branches become waves at the top to reach up to the final picture of the beautiful Penelope.
